On the 18th May 2019 we had our second session of the Teacher Workshop at Heathfield High School. The session was quite successful, with the classroom filled with teachers that showed interest on improving oneself. The session was taught by Dr Mmaki Jantjies, Joseph Lumbahe and Ethyn Arrow.
The session started off with Joseph Lumbahe presenting the different PowerPoint’s features for digital stories in education. The session focused on the advanced tools of PowerPoint rather than the basics. After having equipped the teachers with the powerful skills of PowerPoint, the session was accompanied by a workshop letting the learners apply the acquired knowledge by showcasing their ability to embed videos and other great features from their local computer or online and many more.
Right after having a well-deserved break with some lunch, the teachers were ready for the second part of the workshop, which started off with a small presentation by Ethyn Arrow about what Socrative is and how it can be a useful tool for teachers. After the presentation, we proceeded to guide the teachers on how to create a teachers account on the Socrative website. Once everyone was ready, we had the teachers answer a small quiz to show
them how to join an instructor’s room and what the students will see when using Socrative.
After the quiz with some assistance from Dr Mmaki Jantjies, we demonstrated how one can use the results obtained, whether exporting it as a PDF or getting the percentage of questions answered correctly or incorrectly. The next step was to show the teachers how to create their own quizzes on Socrative. We led them back to the teacher login page and where to go. Then demonstrated the different types of quizzes, such as multiple choice, true or false and short answer. Afterwards we had the teaches explore Socrative and construct their own quizzes. Once complete we had one of the teachers quiz the rest, with their newly created quiz.
The session successfully concluded with a closing statement from Dr Mmaki Jantjies.
