Teacher Workshop Day 1

Updated: May 23, 2019

Today we held our Day 1 of the Teacher Workshop at Heathfield High School. It was a great success, with numerous of the teachers attending. The session was taught by Dr Mmaki Jantjies, Joseph, and Nicola.

Dr Mmaki Jantjies started off the session with making sure that all the teachers' had a Gmail account, as the session revolved around working on Google Drive. Once everyone had accessed their accounts, or just created one, the session proceeded with the teachers' filling out a Google Form (from which we gathered what everyone expects to get out of the workshop). From there, Dr Mmaki went on to inform the teachers' about the uses technology can bring in the classroom, and that technology is an enabler when using it to teach. From there, the teachers' were shown how to create a Google Form and the various uses of it. This part of the workshop was ended with the teachers' being asked to create a Google Form at the end of the workshop, and to email their Google Form's link to Dr Mmaki.

After having a small break, Joseph and Nicola proceeded the session with a presentation on Google Drive. The presentation was started off with explaining what Google Drive is, the difference between Google Drive and an online backup system, and how the school can make use of the storage program within the school.

Once the teachers' had an understanding of the Drive is all about, the two Leaders went on to show the teachers' the following -

The various functions Google Drive has;

How to create a folder and to share it with others;

When sharing a folder or document with others what type of access they receive;

How to upload a folder or a file;

How to open an uploaded Document with the Google Docs format, so that they are able to edit and comment without having to leave the drive;

How to create a Google Docs, Excel, and PowerPoint, and how they can share the document so that others are able to access it as well.

The presentation was ended where they had to join up into groups of 4, and among themselves one of them had to create a folder and share it with the others and then create a PowerPoint (using the Google Docs version), name the PowerPoint so that the others are able to access the document as well. Thus, all the members of the groups had to have the PowerPoint open and create 2 or 3 slides, and see how they are able to work and communicate on the same document without having to be on the same device or even the same location.

All in all it was a successful and fun day. We will be holding our Day 2 and Final day of the Workshop at Heathfield High School, where we will hold more sessions to equip the teachers' with more skills, on the 18th May.
